Why should you hire a virtual assistant?

Sue Wheeler

Getting admin support for your business, it is easy to fall into the mindset of seeing it as an overhead and the result is a reduction in productivity as you muddle through those admin tasks.

Sure enough, you might get those jobs done but at what cost?

  • Reduction in planning and future-proofing your business?

  • Less time to spend with prospects or clients?

  • Even worse - compromise of your work/life balance?

A virtual assistant is an investment, someone who is on your side giving you support while you focus on forward-looking work.

Here are some reasons why hiring a virtual assistant to support you in your business is a good investment:

  1. You can hire a virtual assistant to do small tasks. If you took on an employee to do these tasks, you could be paying for them for sitting around doing nothing and you have the added stress of trying to find other things to fill their time. Instead, a virtual assistant gives you the flexibility to stop and start when on a flexible plan. Most virtual assistants also have a Pay As You Go plan and will normally charge an hourly rate or project rate. You will only be charged for the time actually worked.

  2. No Overheads - when you hire a virtual assistant, they will work remotely so you will not be required to provide office space, equipment, internet connection, or other office-related expenses.

  3. No Training Costs - when you take on an employee - more often than not you might be required to send them on several training courses. This results in a double-whammy of costs - 1) training course costs and... 2) time away from work. When you hire a virtual assistant for a specific task, more often than not they will already be knowledgeable in the work you require as you are hiring them for a specific task - so you wouldn't normally take on the services of a particular virtual assistant if they do not have the required skills for the task you hired them for.

  4. Time to do the crucial parts of your business - hiring a virtual assistant to support the business operational and administrative tasks of your business allows you to free up your time to focus on forward-looking tasks for your business that only you can do. Things like focusing on your clients, networking, sales, business development, and strategy.

  5. Deal with sudden business scope increases - A virtual assistant can help you be on the ball more quickly when your business increases in scope quicker than expected. They can come on board quickly and efficiently and get to work straight away without the long drawn-out processes of recruitment required when taking on employees.

So, hiring a virtual assistant is not the overhead that is commonly assumed. A virtual assistant can help you and your business grow and free up your time to do just that.
